It's been 43+ years in the making, but the final countdown has begun to the Saints' first Super Bowl appearance! Myself and WAFB producer Angelle Dupre - a Chalmette native - just arrived at the unofficial Saints party in Fort Lauderdale at a restaurant called Shuck n Dive. Wow! It's nearly 4 hours to game time and there are at least a couple hundred Saints fans here.
As you might expect, the beers are flowing and the music is pumping. A playlist of songs that are all about the Saints already has much of the crowd that has taken over the parking lot dancing.
Within 15 minutes of arriving, I met 2 groups of Baton Rouge residents who have made the long journey to south Florida. This may be my favorite story of the week so far, but 2 ladies from BTR were down here, minus their husbands, and about to head to the game. The husbands apparently gave the trip to them as a gift! Aren't men usually begging women to go on trips like this? So I wonder what the husbands are up to at home? ;)
The game will be projected onto the side of a large box truck parked in the lot for all of the fans. The excitement is building!
Wherever you may be, take this day in and enjoy it to its fullest. It's been a very long time coming and who knows how long it will be before we get another chance to have a day like this!
